How to Reduce Gate Valves

2012-07-17

If you have a water line with low pressure, putting a reducer behind or down line from theGATE VALVES is the ideal solution. If you cannot increase the fluid volume within the pipe, a reducer forces the water into higher pressure by controlling its flow. The reason to put a reducer behind a gate valve is that you already have a joint in the line, making it an easier location for disassembly. Since you have a joint, disconnect the existing pipe, attach a reducer and assemble the pipe down line with the reducer to increase water pressure

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off or kill the fluid source up the line from the gate valve you want to reduce. Preferably, this would be at another gate valve. If possible, open the down line release and drain the fluid from the pipe.

    • 2

Detach the down line side of the gate valve from the existing pipe with the pipe wrench. Remove the flange bolts if the gate valve is flanged or unscrew the collar if the valve is threaded.

    • 3

Attach the reducer down line of the gate valve. Beforehand, cover the pipe threads with Teflon tape, if the gate valve is threaded. If it is flanged, cover the flange gasket with silicone.

    • 4

Attach the replacement pipe to the reducer.
