Instructions 1GATE VALVES Turn off the water where the water main enters the house. Open faucets to the water lines before making cuts to any pipes. 2 Cut out a section of pipe in the water line the gate valve is being soldered into. Remember that each end of the cut copper pipe will be pushed into the gate valve anywhere from 1/2 to 3/4 inch on each side. Subtract those measurements to determine the accurate amount of pipe to cut out. Slip the pipe into the jaws of the pipe cutter and screw the handle to close the jaws. When the rotating cutting wheel bites into the surface of pipe, stop and rotate the cutter 360 degrees. Tighten the handle a bit more and swivel the cutter again.
