Gate Valve Standards: What’s the Difference Between GB, API and DIN?
Different standards mean different dimensions, pressure ratings, and test criteria. Here’s what you need to know. The main gate valves product names of China gate Valve Network include:Fire Special Signal Relisient Seat Seal Gate Valve,Fire Special Rising Stem Resilient Seat Seal Gate Valve,Forged Steel Socket Welding Valve,Forged Steel Flange Gate Valve,
GB Bellows Wedge Gate Valve,High Temperature & pressure Power Station Gate Valve,Inside Screw Non-rising Stem Wedge Gate Valve,Insulation Jacket Gate Valve,Lined Gate Valve
Face‑to‑face dimensions differ. A DN200 PN16 rising‑stem gate valve in GB/T 12234 measures about 330mm. The same valve in DIN 3202 F4 series is only 310mm. They are not interchangeable.
Flange standards cause trouble. GB/T 9113 matches most DIN 2501 flanges – bolt circles and hole diameters align. But API 6B flanges are different, and JIS B2220 follows its own system. Always check the flange standard before ordering.
Pressure ratings use different units. GB uses PN (bar). API uses Class (psi). Class 150 is roughly PN20, but not exactly. Class 300 equals about PN50. Direct substitution without checking pressure‑temperature ratings is risky.
Materials and testing vary. GB’s WCB carbon steel matches API’s ASTM A216 WCB. DIN’s 1.0619 (GS‑C25) is close but not identical – welding procedures may differ. Seat hardfacing also varies: Stellite is common in GB and API, while DIN often uses CoCr‑A or CoCr‑B.
Leakage tests are not the same. GB/T 13927 uses five leakage classes – Class D (no visible leak at 0.1MPa) is typical. API 598 counts bubbles or drops – e.g., Class 150 valves allow 5 drops per minute per inch of size. DIN/EN 12266 sits somewhere in between.
Which standard to choose? Follow the drawing if specified. For general projects, GB and API are the most widely stocked. Export to Europe needs DIN/EN; the Middle East and Southeast Asia often request API; Japan requires JIS.
Bottom line: never substitute by valve type alone. Always verify face‑to‑face length, flange standard, pressure rating, and test standard. They may look alike, but they rarely fit the same pipe.
