How to Install Valve Handwheel, Wrench, Locking Device & Position Indicator | API 6D / ISO 14313 Standards
Installation Guide for Valve Handwheel, Wrench, Locking Device, and Position Indicator (Based on API 6D / ISO 14313)
This guide outlines the core installation and specification requirements for valve actuators and accessories as defined by the API 6D and ISO 14313 standards. Proper valve handwheel installation and valve wrench mounting are critical for safe and reliable operation. The main gate valves product names of China gate Valve Network include:API Bevel Gear Lug&wafer Knife-shaped Gate Valve,API Pneumatic Lug&wafer Knife-shaped Gate Valve,API Cryogenic Gate Valve,API Flange Gate Valve,Bevel Gear Slurry ValveElectric Rising Stem Double Disc Parallel Gate Valve,Electric Non-rising Stem Single Disc Wedge Gate Valve,Electric Rising Stem Single Disc Wedge Gate Valve,Electric Wafer Knife-shaped Gate Valve
1. Handwheels and Wrenches (Handles)
Design and Connection:
A valve wrench shall be of one-piece design or consist of a head mounted on the valve stem, designed to accept an extension handle. The head design shall permit permanent attachment of the extension if specified by the purchaser.
Operating Force Limit:
The maximum force required to operate the handwheel or wrench, for the breakout torque or stem thrust, shall not exceed 360 N.
Dimensional Limits:
Wrench Length: The wrench shall be no longer than two times the valve (face-to-face or end-to-end) construction length.
Handwheel Diameter: The handwheel diameter shall not exceed the valve construction length or 1000 mm, whichever is less, unless otherwise specified. For valves larger than DN 40 (NPS 1½), the spokes shall not extend beyond the rim of the handwheel, unless otherwise specified.
Torque Protection:
When specified by the purchaser, a handwheel on a gearbox input shaft shall be provided with a torque limiting device, such as a shear pin, to prevent damage to the drive train.
2. Locking Devices
General Requirement:
Valves shall be provided with locking devices if specified by the purchaser.
Check Valves:
The locking device for check valves shall be designed to lock the valve in the open position only.
Other Valve Types:
For other valve types, the valve locking device shall be designed to lock the valve in the open and/or closed position.
3. Position Indicators
Basic Requirement:
Valves equipped with manual or power actuators shall be provided with a visible valve position indicator to show the open and closed position of the closure member.
Specific Rules for Plug and Ball Valves:
For plug valves and ball valves, the wrench and/or position indicator shall be aligned with the pipeline when the valve is in the open position and across it when in the closed position. The design shall be such that parts of the indicator and/or wrench cannot be assembled to indicate incorrectly the position of the valve.
